About This Adaptation:
“My
approach from the beginning had been to see Prospero as a female
character; I was fascinated by the exploration of the dynamics of a
relationship between mother and daughter, from sister to brother, a strong
woman in a male-dominated societal structure. I was astounded at the
resonance, and became acutely aware of the seismic shift the character’s
impact has when seen from the woman’s perspective. “My adaptation is not a loose, conceptualized version of The Tempest, but a musical adaptation employing only Shakespeare’s actual text – approximately 80 percent of which is sung. The text was the fount from which everything sprung. I wanted to combine a 'historically informed' texture with a contemporary sound. I created a style of music which is early-Baroque inspired with strongly modern harmonic language; in other words: theatre music, inspired by the Italian Baroque.”
